This mask represents the souls of women who have become demonic due to obsession or jealousy.
Its distinctive and frightening appearance makes it one of the most recognizable nō masks. This mask is demonic, but also painful and tormented, revealing the complexity of human emotions. Each aspect of the mask has a very emotional expression; when the actor looks straight ahead, the mask appears frightening and angry; when tilted slightly downward, the face appears deeply sad.

Hannya is usually carried in titles like Aoi-no-ue or Dōjyōji from nō theater.

The name Hannya is generally said to come from the name of an artist monk Hannya-bō who created it.
