Noh mask of Yase-otoko
Anonymous
Meaning "emaciated man," the name Yase-otoko aptly describes the visage of the mask. The hollow eye sockets, deeply sunken cheeks, and protruding jawbone—in short, the devastation of the flesh—represent the torment of a soul condemned to eternal damnation. The example illustrated here conforms to the standard Yase-otoko type which is usually a ghost suffering in hell.
