Incense tray
This simple, gnarled, twisted and chaotic root was used as a presentation tray during
the kōdō, the incense ceremony.
It is probably no coincidence that this root was chosen for this use.
Its shape is indeed reminiscent of kyara, the highest quality of Aloes wood, a type of incense with a deep aroma whose price per ounce is higher than gold.
Kyara actually means «precious» in Japanese.
