NIŌ – Vajrapāni (wrathful guardians of the Buddha) by Yufu Shohaku
Yufu Shohaku, born in 1941, is the dean of this MBP.
Son of Yufu Chikuryu, Yufu Shohaku is a second generation Beppu artist. His father was the apprentice of Satō Chikuyūsai, the master of Shōno Shōunsai, the first bamboo artist named a Living National Treasure.
From primary school, he was introduced to the basic techniques of this art by his father and produced his first basketwork for ikebana. Today he is an artist renowned for his unique style which mixes in his works the roots of various plants and fragments of giant bamboo with traditional braiding. An independent artist, he directs the professional association of bamboo artists and is the recipient of numerous awards.
