The tall cylinder shape is poetically called « Soaring Cliff », and this white japanese bamboo basket is aptly entitled White Seagull (Shiro-kamome in Japanese).
Waichisaii III succeeded as the head of family in 1933, upon the death of Waichisai II (1877-1933). Judging from the Hakogaki inscription and its fine calligraphic style, this work dates from his mid-to-later period as an artist.
西摂 Seisetsu refers to south-eastern parts of modern Hyogo prefecture. Waichisai III’s father (Waichisai II) visited Arima Hot Spa to recuperate and taught bamboo crafting there; Arima belongs to Seisetsu region.
