Tabane-ami and ajiro-ami

Trained at the Ōita Prefectural Bamboo Craft Training Center, Ikeda Yoshihiro develops an approach in which bamboo becomes less a field for virtuosity than a medium through which inner forms may emerge. He works without preparatory drawings, using regular bamboo strips and deliberately simple techniques, allowing the form to develop in a back-and-forth between chance and intention.

In Ryūseki, braided bands and rotating ribbons compose an open volume, as if traversed by the force of an invisible movement. The work seems to record a trajectory, a trace suspended in space, between displacement and the memory of the gesture.
