Tanabe Chikuunsai I was the originator of an uninterrupted and still active and over a century old family lineage, and instrumental in the training of many prestigious artists in the Kansai area. He was himself a scholar in the Chinese tradition (bunjin), practicing the art of ikebana and calligraphy while studying Chinese painting and the Sencha tea ceremony.
