La Galerie Mingei représente Yonezawa Jirō en France.
Originaire de la préfecture d’Ōita, sur l’île de Kyūshū, Yonezawa Jirō pratique l’art du bambou depuis plus de 35 ans. Après un apprentissage au centre de formation de Beppu, il s’initie auprès de l’artiste Masakazu Ono, puis poursuit sa formation à l’Institut de recherche d’art industriel d’Ōita. Il est l’unique artiste du bambou à avoir séjourné aux États-Unis pendant 18 ans. Son travail est alors devenu plus audacieux, laissant place à des œuvres sculpturales, influencées par le mouvement Fiber Art. Depuis 2008, il réside à nouveau dans son village natal où il a édifié son studio. Ses œuvres sont présentes dans de nombreuses collections américaines tant publiques que privées. La qualité régénératrice du bambou est à l’origine de sa fascination pour ce matériau. Il considère le processus de préparation du bambou avant tressage comme intrinsèquement méditatif. La forme, le contraste, l’équilibre et l’interaction de l’espace, de la couleur et de la texture sont autant d’éléments constitutifs de son œuvre.
