Hashimoto Sensetsu (1918-2008)

The artist was born in 1918 (Taisho 7), his given name Toshio.

He went to Tokyo to study bamboo art under Kuroda Michitaro, who was a relative of the family. Whilst working at Kuroda’s studio, Hashimoto Sensetsu met Bruno Julius Taut (1880-1938) who was a patron of Kuroda and impressed him greatly.

In 1945, he set up his own studio in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, he and his younger brother Masahiko worked together making bamboo baskets.

With the guidance of Himi Kodo 氷見晃堂 (1906-75, a Ningen Kokuho wood craft artist) he started exhibiting regularly at Nihon Dento Kogeiten and later became a judge.

The artist started using his art name Sensetsu from 1970 (Showa 45). Between 1986 and 1999, he taught at Kanazawa College of Art. He continued to exhibit and won awards at the Nihon Dento Kogeiten exhibitions.
